This work was written by the authorization of the then Bombay government in connection with the local and Imperial Gazetteer. The materials were gathered from many sources including the writings of various travelers who had visited Goa, and records preserved by the Govt. of Goa and from ancient inscriptions. The book is in two parts; the first part has 9 chapters and follows the format of a the gazetteer allotting a section to each different aspect of the area, like physical features, population, food, trees and forests, climate, education, list of Viceroys etc. The 2nd part is the Historical and Archaeological sketch of the city and is divided into 16 chapters. The book was first published in 1878.

This travelogue of the German captain Leopold von Orlich was undertaken around the time of the end of the first Afghan War (1840’s). He started from Southhampton and reached Bombay. The book is in the form of a series of letters written to his friends. From Bombay he went to Poona and then returned. In a travel book it must be understood that all the description made are eye witness accounts or first hand experiences. The author describes all that he saw; the topography, the people and their customs, the rites and ceremonies, the flora and fauna, the commerce and trade, the law and governance etc. From Bombay he sets out for Karachi and thence to Ferozpur via Retee, Khanpur and Bhawalpur. In the Panjab he notices Ranjit sings and his court and give a description of the sati of his 11 wives on his Pyre. From Ferozpur he goes to Lahore and then returns. Starting again from Ferozpur he makes his way to Delhi via Dathal, Saqun, Keythul and Karval. In Delhi he visited the Redfort, the Qutab Minar, and the prepares to visit Agra. Seeing the sights in Agra he visits Secondurabad and Fatehpur Sikr; and goes onward to Kanpur and form there to Lucknow. He dwells in the description of his city and offers observations of the palaces, gardens, bazzars; he visits the king and then goes back to Kanpur, to proceed to Allahabad and form there to Benaras. In his 9th letter he describes the criminal tribes of India called the Thugs and Phansigars. From Banaras he goes to Calcutta and gives a vivid description of that city. He then returns to Bombay via steamer and returns to England. This book is a reprint of the 1845 edition. Translated from German. 19th century - Nineteenth century

A Journey through the Kingdom of Oudh (1849-50)

Born in 1788 W.H. Sleeman came to India as in infantry cadet in the Bengal army in 1809. He rose through the ranks, finally to become Major General in 1854. He is best remembered for his work for the suppression of the Thugs. He also received the coveted post of British resident at Lucknow and was the one who cautioned the British against annexing oudh as, he believed, that such an action would lead to a mutiny among the native sepoys. This was in 1854-55. This book recounts this journey through oudh to acess the situation prevalent there. Traveling through the area he faithfully recounts all that he saw; the people, their practices, the land tenure, the cultivation, the state of the army, the political situation, the nobility etc. His travel started in December 1849 and ended in Feb 1850. This book is a reprint of the 1858 edition. 19th century - Nineteenth century
