In the past decade the rise of frequently violent competition for business and political leadership in the Thai provinces, and the growing importance of provincial support for national powerholders, has drawn attention to the way in which these town and village centers are being transformed by capitalist development. This study presents a close examination of how a Sino-Thai lineage, founded by a Chinese immigrant, Khaw Soo Cheang, functioned as a business enterprise over nearly a century and a half, perpetuating itself not only by making key political and economic alliances, but also by securing its fortunes through a family trust. Mais l'antichambre de la Chine et du Japon paraît regorger de richesses, et le Siam devient vite un champ ouvert à toutes les intrigues commerciales, tandis que des jésuites, qui n'ont pas la moindre idée du bouddhisme qu'ils cherchent à combattre, s'évertuent à apprendre le siamois de cour.
Le beau rêve d'entente mutuelle s'effondre trente ans plus tard, lorsque les officiers du Grand Roi, voulant imposer au Siam une " protection " militaire, déclenchent une révolution de palais. L'aventure se termine sans gloire pour les Français. " Incapables de se conduire eux-mêmes, ils succombèrent à la vanité de vouloir gouverner. "
Ce récit mouvementé, tour à tour drôle, pittoresque et dramatique, nous présente la culture d'un royaume bouddhique qui fascina littéralement les contemporains. Mais l'heure était à la curiosité et non à la compréhension. En cette fin du XVIIe siècle, l'Occident n'avait pas encore découvert la tolérance.

Dirk Van der Cruysse, professeur à l'université d'Anvers, est l'auteur de deux livres sur Saint-Simon, d'une biographie de Madame Palatine (Fayard, 1988) et d'éditions critiques des Lettres françaises de la Palatine et des Mémoires et lettres de voyage de Sophie de Hanovre.
