Ah Ku and Karayuki-san : Prostitution in Singapore

Ah Ku and Karayuki-san : Prostitution in Singapore WARREN (James Francis) Singapour, Singapore University Press

Auteur(s) : WARREN (James Francis)

Editeur : Singapour, Singapore University Press

Among the many groups of workers whose labor built Singapore in the 20th century, there may be none as marginalized in memory as the women who travelled from China and Japan to work in Singapore as prostitutes. This study sketches in the trade in women and children in Asia, and--making innovative use of Coroner's Inquests and other records--hones in on the details of the prostitutes' lives in the colonial city: the daily brothel routine, crises and violence, social relations, leisure, mobility, disease and death.
The result is a powerful historical account of human nature, of human relationships, of pride, prejudice, struggle and spirit. Ordinary people tumble from the pages of the records: they talk about choice of partners, love and betrayal, desperation and alienation, drawing us into their lives.

This social history is a powerful corrective to the romantic image of colonial Singapore as a city of excitement, sophistication, exotic charm and easy sex.

In the years since its original publication in 1992, this book, and its companion Rickshaw Coolie, have become an inspiration to those seeking to come to grips with Singapore's past.

Contesting Space in Colonial Singapore. Power Relations and the Urban Built Environment

Contesting Space in Colonial Singapore. Power Relations and the Urban Built Environment YEOH (Brenda S.A.) Singapour, Singapore University Press

Auteur(s) : YEOH (Brenda S.A.)

Editeur : Singapour, Singapore University Press

In the British colonial city of Singapore, municipal authorities and Asian communities faced off over numerous issues. As the city expanded, disputes arose in connection with sanitation, housing, street names, control over pedestrian 'five-foot-ways', and sacred spaces such as burial grounds. Brenda Yeoh's Contesting Space in Colonial Singapore details these conflicts and how they shaped the city.
The British administration structured the private and public environments of the city with an eye toward shaping human behavior, following scientific principles and the lessons of urban planning in other parts of the world. For the Asian communities, Singapore was the place where they lived according to their own values, priorities and resources. The two perceptions of the city frequently clashed, and the author reads the cityscape of Singapore as the result of this contest between discipline and resistance.

Drawing on meticulous research and a theoretically sophisticated use of cultural and social geography, post-colonial historical discourse, and social theory, the author offers a compelling picture of a critical stage in Singapore's past. It is an important contribution to the study of colonial cities and an indispensable resource for understanding the shape of modern Singapore.

State Society Relations in Singapore

State Society Relations in Singapore KOH (Gillian) & OOI GIOK LING (eds.) Singapour, Oxford University P

Auteur(s) : KOH (Gillian) & OOI GIOK LING (eds.)

Editeur : Singapour, Oxford University P

This book is a collection of essays first presented by leaders from the state, market, and civic sectors at a national dialogue on civil society in Singapore, organized by the Institute of Policy Studies, in May 1998. It is set in the context of current thinking on development and governance, where there has been a paradigm shift from viewing state and civil society as a zero-sum, adversarial relationship to viewing it as having the potential for synergies. It records an initial response to this new notion across the sectors represented. In effect, it also reflects the current condition of state-society relations some years since the People's Action Party government indicated it welcomed a greater role for civil society.

Private Ownership of Public Housing in Singapore

Private Ownership of Public Housing in Singapore TAN SOOK YEE Singapore, Times Academic Press

Auteur(s) : TAN SOOK YEE

Editeur : Singapore, Times Academic Press

Since 1960, housing built by the Housing and Development Board has become part of the Singapore scene. As a consequence of the Home Ownership Scheme, 81% of all HDB flat dwellers own the units in which they live. The flats are sold at affordable prices, make possible by government subsidies.

HDB housing, for all intents and purposes, is public housing. However, as it evolves from a basic necessity to a source of wealth for its owner, questions have been raised about the true meaning of private ownership of public housing in view of the 99-year leases on public housing and the restrictions on such ownership and its transfer. This book examines the rights of the owners of such housing, and the question of whether it is appropriate to refer to the rights of the HDB flat dwellers as ownership. It traces in detail and chronologically, many of the major pieces of legislation introduced in support of the development of public housing estates and their management in Singapore. This book would be of particular interest to researchers of urban housing and its legal framework.
